about

The Afternoon Tea Light Orchestra was formed by Pat Collins after the Phantom Orchestra folded in late 1981. He had met Bernard O'Neill on a string session at Lombard Street Studios and after they went up to McCullough Piggott for some strings decided to put together a trio to play Beethoven String Trios. Fergus Sheils was living between Bernard in Castilla Park , Clontarf and Pat on Castle Avenue , Clontarf in his house on Blackheath Park so a rendezvous was set up and after a few rehearsals Fergus played some jazz pieces he was working on. Pat decided to mix the classical music and jazz music to form a cafe type orchestra and Bert Crossland was brought in on rhythm guitar. Within a month Alan Kelly had returned to Ireland to replace Bert and brought with him Rudolphe Raffalli on lead guitar. This three track demo was recorded in December of 1981 by Jimmy Goode using just a stereo pair of mics. The third track which was labelled "Cameo" starts with a piece called Carriage and Pair , a piece of film music that Fergus had unearthed and features Alan Kelly on sleigh bells! The group played numerous gigs in Dublin throughout the spring and summer of 1982 but folded after Fergus and Bernard secured other classical work.
